Harnessing the Power of AI (9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.)

Harness the transformative power of AI to revolutionize business landscapes, drive unprecedented innovation, and optimize operational efficiency. While AI offers unparalleled opportunities, prudent implementation is essential. Navigating ethical dilemmas, mitigating biases, and prioritizing responsible AI practices will be necessary prerequisites to unlock AI’s full potential.

Harnessing the Power of AI (9:10 a.m. - 10:25 a.m.)

The advent of generative AI has put before us an almost infinite number of new use cases for AI. The question we need to ask before we take one single step is not “What could we do?” but “What should we do?”

9:10 AM

Now in its sixth year, the State of AI report has become a popular bellwether for the AI industry, pointing out trends and making predictions for the year ahead. This year’s report offers insights and predictions on AI research, industry advancements, politics, and AI safety.

9:45 AM

Providing a resource for U.S. policymakers, a committee of MIT leaders and scholars has released a set of policy briefs that outlines a framework for the governance of artificial intelligence. The aim is to help enhance U.S. leadership in the area of artificial intelligence - limiting harm that could result from the new technologies while encouraging exploration of how AI deployment could be beneficial to society.

10:05 AM

The extraordinary ubiquity of generative AI has seen the technology applied to health care and life sciences, energy, transportation, and more – every use case incorporating unstructured data analysis beyond the capability of any human. This session explores the unexpected areas of impact and implications for the global population.

Controlling AI (10:55 a.m. - 12:25 p.m.)

As AI continues to weave itself inextricably into the social and economic fabric of our world, many opinions have been voiced on how to ensure equitable and responsible use of its decision-making capabilities. Fostering transparent, open processes; safeguarding with regulatory frameworks; and ensuring legal accountability are among the controls we will discuss.

11:15 AM

Last March, Yoshua Bengio, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and thousands of others signed an open letter calling for AI labs around the world to immediately pause the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months to allow for the development of safety protocols. It didn’t work. Or did it?

11:40 AM

With the recent passing of the European Union AI Act, Biden’s Executive Order on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy AI, and California’s proposed new safe AI regulations, the American and global regulatory environment for AI is rapidly changing. This session explores the plethora of new regulations and their impact on those creating the AI systems that are fast becoming the technical pillars of our digital society.

12:00 PM

Several legal battles are underway that will determine what differentiates fair use from foul play when it comes to AI-generated content. The question of whether the use of publicly available — and in some cases, legally protected — material for training AI models constitutes copyright infringement has been thrust into the spotlight, pitting artists and authors against the large language model makers. We put intellectual property, precedent, and the very meaning of copyright itself, on trial.

The Digital Politician (1:25 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.)

Over the last twenty years, technology has played an increasingly prominent role in elections. From amplifying candidates' voices to the ethical challenges of misinformation, AI and digital strategies are reshaping the modern politician and the very future of democracy.

1:45 PM

In 2024, over 40 national elections will happen around the world, making it one of the most consequential political years in history. At the same time, generative AI has enabled an entirely new age of misinformation. And it's all coalescing with major shakeups at social media companies and information platforms. What does the intersection of technology, social media, and information consumption mean for democracy?

2:15 PM

In a world of synthetic media and generative AI, authenticity is everything. What we buy, who we communicate with, and what we believe are all influenced by images and videos. Digital content authentication technologies are attempting to address the issues of misinformation and disinformation caused by generative, manipulated, or deepfake digital content.

2:35 PM

Micro-influencers—social media accounts with large but not huge followings, who are likely influential at a local level—are an emerging feature of political campaigns. This strategy allows campaigns to plug into a specific group of people via a trusted voice. In addition to posting for cash, influencers can also help campaigns understand their audience and platforms. The strategy seems to operate in a bit of a legal gray area, powered by AI.

Networking Break (3:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.)

Networking and refreshments for our live audience.

3:00 PM
Networking Break
Innovating with Generative AI (3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.)

We stand at the dawn of generative AI innovation, only beginning to grasp its transformative potential. As this nascent technology matures, its creative and adaptive capacities will redefine industries, enhance human-machine symbiosis, and unlock uncharted realms of possibility. We introduce some of the pioneers breaking new ground with AI.

3:30 PM

We have entered an era where AI has reshaped the creative process, from driving ideation and increased efficiency, to unlocking magical design possibilities. We explore the technology that allows artists to bring their visions to life at the speed of imagination and discuss the ethical and legal implications of generated imagery.

3:55 PM

To increase the predictive powers of large language models, it’s incumbent on businesses to train them on as much data as possible. Problems arise though when LLM outputs leak the private data on which they’ve been trained. We explore privacy-preserving methods that keep secrets secret and help organizations maintain compliance with privacy regulations such as GDPR.

4:25 PM

New generative models have been released which enable video content creation from text instructions. These models understand not only what the user has asked for in the prompt, but also how those things exist in the physical world. What will this mean for Hollywood? And more importantly, what safeguards need to be put into place to prevent misinformation, bias, and hateful content?
