Innovators Under 35

Every year, MIT Technology Review selects a list of the most promising innovators around the world. They’re inquisitive and persistent, inspired and inspiring. No matter whether they’re pursuing medical breakthroughs, refashioning energy technologies, making computers more useful, or engineering cooler electronic devices—and regardless of whether they are heading startups, working in big companies, or doing research in academic labs—they all are poised to be leaders in their fields.

About the Innovators Under 35

Innovators Under 35 is an annual list that recognizes outstanding innovators who are younger than 35. The awards span a wide range of fields, including biotechnology, materials, computer hardware, energy, transportation, communications, and the Internet.

We are searching for individuals whose superb technical work promises to shape the coming decades. Our goal is to recognize the development of new technology or the creative application of existing technologies to solve the world’s biggest problems. We reward ingenious and elegant work that matters to the world at large—not just to peers in a particular field or industry.

MIT Technology Review showcases global list winners in our July/August issue and online at www.technologyreview.com/tr35. Every year, we recognize global winners at the Emtech MIT conference on campus, and regional winners through our regional EmTechs and summit events.

History & Geography

Established in 1999 in honor of MIT Technology Review’s 100th anniversary, the Innovators Under 35 list was initially conceived as a list of 100 innovators.

By the mid-2000s, the list had evolved to focus on 35 innovators each year. In 2010, we expanded our search for the most promising innovators by organizing regional editions of the list. There are regional versions in Latin America, Europe, China, India, Asia Pacific, and MENA. The winners of the regional lists are automatically considered for the global list.
