Job Title
VP & CTO
Company
Google Cloud
Brief Biography
Will Grannis is the founder and leader of Google’s CTO Office, a global team of former CTOs and senior technologists who work hand-in-hand with Google Cloud’s largest customers to solve their most complex business problems while advising Google on emerging technology and business trends across industries and geographies. His team has catalyzed the creation of numerous technologies and businesses in domains spanning sustainability, web3, AI, public sector, health assurance, quantum computing, and cybersecurity.
Before joining Google 8 years ago, Will spent over two decades building and deploying global information systems and platforms. Most recently, Will was SVP of Engineering and CTO at L-3 Communications, where he transformed the company’s product roadmap and business model around advances in cloud computing and machine learning. He arrived at L-3 following the acquisition of his company, What’s Next, a boutique engineering firm that solved a few historically intractable national security challenges using an event-driven big data platform and unsupervised machine learning. Prior to What’s Next, Will spent several years at the Boeing Company in their Phantom Works applied research and development group, leading technology and front end business teams in big data, cybersecurity, autonomy, AI, high performance computing, and IT infrastructure. Will began his commercial tech career as the product manager for Blue Force Tracking, a globally deployed, miniaturized satellite communications solution which reduced fratricide for US and coalition militaries, while also improving in-transit visibility for critical assets. His transition to tech followed a brief career as an officer in the US Army, with assignments including Forward Observer for the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Deputy Effects Coordinator (Computer Network Operations, PSYOPS, Artillery) for the 25th Infantry Division, and Signals Officer (CTO) for the 201st Military Intelligence Brigade. Will has jumped out of perfectly functioning planes, rapidly attached himself to the bottom of a helicopter while in flight, and (accidentally) spent time in the jungles of Central America with various uninvited reptiles.
Will holds a bachelor of science degree in operations research from the United States Military Academy at West Point and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Will has served as an independent director in pre-IPO companies spanning real estate, fintech, and cybersecurity, and numerous advisory boards including the US Defense Innovation board. He currently serves as board chair for Mandiant, board member of Google Public Sector, and is an active investor in Datatribe and other boutique national security tech funds. Will and his family reside in Austin, TX.
