Kathryn Tunyasuvunakool is a research scientist, working on applications of machine learning to the study of proteins. She was a member of the team that developed AlphaFold, a model for predicting a protein’s structure from its amino acid sequence. Subsequently, she has worked on analyzing AlphaFold’s predictions for the human proteome, and making a prediction database available together with the European Bioinformatics Institute. She still doesn’t know what she wants to be when she grows up and has changed fields several times, starting in mathematics, transferring to biology, and working for several years as a software engineer.
