Brief Biography
Dr. Michael Farzan received his undergraduate degree in Government from Harvard College and his PhD in Immunology from Harvard Medical School. He was appointed Assistant Professor at HMS in 2002 and left HMS as Professor of Microbiology and Immunobiology in 2012 to join The Scripps Research Institute. Although his primary work has been focused on HIV-1, his early contributions the coronavirus field include the discovery, during the SARS-CoV-1 epidemic, of ACE2 as the receptor for SARS coronavirus 1 and identification of the SARS-CoV-1 receptor-binding domain (RBD), leading to the structure of the RBD-ACE2 structure, solved in collaboration with Fang Li and Stephen Harrisson. Dr. Michael Farzan is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps.
