The Engine is an early-stage venture firm that invests in Tough Tech companies building transformative technology that will deliver a healthier population, more equitable society, and more resilient world.
It was conceived and created by MIT to address the unmet need for sustained support for startups with the potential to solve complex, existential challenges and make material, positive impact on society. Propelled out of MIT in 2016, and independently managed and operated, The Engine was designed as an “innovation orchard” where Tough Tech founders receive the capital, knowledge, network connections, and access to specialized equipment they need to develop and commercialize foundational, disruptive technology. The Engine’s focus on world positive capitalism eliminates the boundaries of innovation and serves as a catalyst for new fields, enabling our founders to drive meaningful forward progress for the world.
