Brief Biography
Michelle is Vice President of the Machine Learning Solutions Lab at Amazon Web Services (AWS). In this role, Michelle leads a global business whose mission is to help customers identify their highest-value machine learning use cases and implement them. By pairing the customer's team with AWS machine learning experts and using discovery workshops and ideation sessions to explore the art of the possible and art of the practical, the ML Solutions Lab “works backwards” from each customer's unique business problems to deliver implemented, machine learning solutions.

Michelle is a former CEO of a $3.4 billion governmental agency, corporate board member (NASD: ALRM and Nauto), professor, MIT-AI Lab trained computer scientist, and Silicon Valley veteran experienced in scaling fast-growing companies. Most recently, Michelle served as the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). In this Presidentially-appointed, Senate-confirmed role, she led one of the largest intellectual property offices in the world, with 13,000 employees and an annual budget of $3.4 billion. She was also the principal advisor to the President of the United States on intellectual property policies. Michelle is the first woman in our country’s 200+ year history to hold this position. During her tenure, she brought the use of artificial intelligence and data analytics to increase revenues and operational efficiencies of a 200+ governmental agency.

Before public service, Michelle served as an executive at Google. She joined the company when it was relatively young, and helped the company grow into a multi-national Fortune 500 corporation during its formative years. Michelle held the 2017-2018 appointment as the Herman Phleger Visiting Professor at Stanford Law School where she taught a course on disruptive technologies and their impact on laws and regulations. Prior to Google, Michelle was a partner at Fenwick & West LLP, where she specialized in advising high-technology clients. Michelle also worked as a computer scientist at Hewlett-Packard Research Laboratories and the MIT Artificial Intelligence (AI) Laboratory. She holds a B.S. and an M.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT, where she wrote her graduate thesis on artificial intelligence at the MIT AI Lab. She earned a J.D. from Stanford Law School, and is a frequent speaker on digital transformation and innovation topics. Michelle also serves as a member of the MIT Corporation, the governing body and board of trustees of MIT.
